How to get to Novalja by car?

Toll information in Austria and Slovenia

The motorway vignette in Austria for 2 months  is 21,80 € and for 10 days 7,60€. Toll for Tauernautobahn and Karawanken tunel is another 9,50 € or 6,50 €.

Tip to save money if you're traveling through Karawanken tunel – you can buy Punkt karte for 58€. The ticket has 800 credits, and one way is 55 credits. Normaly the on wax ticket is 6.50 €, this way you pay only 3,50 €. The ticket lasts 18 months and it's transerable so you can lend it to your friends as well. In Slovenia you'll pay 95€ for the yearly, 30€ for the monthly and 15€ for the weekly vignette.

In Novalja center there are several parkplaces. Parking in Novalja center costs 10 kn (cca 1.5 €) per hour from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the summer and from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. in winter months. You can pay for parking in cash at the parking meter or via cellphone. Parking at Zrce beach costs 5 kn (cca 0.8 €) per hour, and on the parkplace in front of your apartment, the parking is free.

Driving with lights on, day and night
(0 -24 h), is obligatory.

Mobile phone usage while driving is strictly forbidden.

Allowed amount of alcohol in blood is 0,0‰!

Seat belt usage is obligatory.


Traffic regulations: Traffic is conducted on the right side

Speed limitations:

- 130kmh (81mph) on the highway,
- 100kmh (62mph) on the motorway
- 50kmh (31mph) within inhabited areas
- 80kmh (50mph) outside inhabited areas
Penalties depend on the transgression of the speed limit.

Alcohol in blood is not allowed. Amount of alcohol in blood is restricted to 0,05 percentiles, but if you're a professional driver or involved in a traffic accident it is restricted to 0,0 and the penalties are severe (100€ for alcohol in blood + traffic penalty).
Accidents must be reported to the police. Number for police is 92 or +385 92.

Obligations in case of a traffic accident: Inform the police (phone no. 92). Secure place of the accident (by placing the triangle) to eliminate the possibility of another accident. Wait for police. If service of your car is necessary call road assistance at the number 987. If calling from abroad, telephone +385 1 987.

MOBILE PHONES: mobile phone usage while driving is strictly forbidden. 

SEAT BELT usage is obligatory

For traveling to Novalja (Croatia) you need to have valid green insurance card (except EU nationals) and a valid driving permit, international driving permit is not required. All motorists should also carry a valid passport or national identity card as proof of identity at all times. National registration in country of origin is required for all foreign vehicles. Third party insurance is mandatory when hiring a car and a valid credit card is also needed. The minimum driving age is 18.

When taking a vehicle abroad that is company owned, hired or borrowed the best course of action is to try to obtain the original V5 registration document (UK citizens) (http://www.number-plates-car-registrations.co.uk/V5_registration_document.htm) together with a letter of authorization from the owner.


 


Petrol stations: Petrol stations in bigger towns as well as on motorways are open non-stop, otherwise working hours are from 06:00 to 20:00. During high season petrol stations are open until 22:00. Types of petrol you can find at the stations: Eurosuper 95, Super 95, Super 98, Super plus 98, Diesel, Euro Diesel, Gas-GPL. It might be a good idea to fill the tank and pick up a Croatia road map that locates gas stations across the country before you start a long trip. These are usually available at the stations themselves or check on-line beforehand.
