Rijeka and Opatija train stations Trains have been used to reach Kvarner since the early beginnings of tourism in this area, i.e. since the 19th century. The two were so closely connected that it is difficult to say whether it is the train that brought tourism to Kvarner or trains were brought to Kvarner by tourism. Tel: +385 51 274 102 is located just outside Matulji, a village about 10 km uphill from Opatija. In the 19th century there was a tram connecting the train station with the center of Opatija. Nowdays, you can take a bus to Opatija (cca 15 minutes), but the train station is somewhat dislocated from the center of Matulji where the bus station is. It might be better to take a taxi (you can prebook it on here) or to go to Rijeka and then take bus no. 32 to Opatija. The bus station for bus no. 32 to Opatija is just accross the road from the train station. Rijeka train station is just outside of the city centre, heading west along the coast road.
Bus numbers 1, 1A, 2, 6, 7, 7A (local Rijeka buses zone 1) and bus number 32 (to Opatija - zone 3) have stops directly in front of the train station and the bus station for the bus no. 32 to Opatija is just across the street. Rijeka train station Ticket office: International office in the central lobby, open 09:00 - 20:45 and domestic open 05:15 - 17:10. Information: on Platform 1 (Ljubljana direction), open 08:30 - 15:30. Sundays and public holidays closed. The staff speak English, German and Italian.
Left luggage (lockers): open 00:00 - 24:00, costs: 15 - 20kn per day. International train linesSince Hungary had no exit to the sea, when Rijeka fell under their rule, they decided to make it their main sea port in the Kvarner bay. The best way to transport the goods to and from the port in the first half of the 19th century was the railways. At the same time, the tourists enjoyed train travel and Matulji train station was much more frequented then today. Before you start to plan your Opatija train vacation, check timetables fro trains coming from Austria, Hungary, Serbia, Slovenia and Switzerland.
