Fishing and spearfishing

You like to fish or spearfish? Find out more on sea, river and lake fishing in Croatia!

The Adriatic sea has an abundance of sea life. You can find exemplary specimens of blue fin tuna. Broadbill swordfish, although not easy to catch, blue and thresher sharks are also relatively common inhabitants of the Adriatic sea. Little tunnies, albacore, the amberjack and mahi-mahi are present in great numbers. Even smaller are the various species of sea bream, and the grey mullet.

Sea fishing                                                          from 65 - 125 € per person

Croatia’s rivers and lakes are amongst the cleanest in the world and as a consequence are well stocked with trout and course fish. Then mountain rivers of Gorski kotar and Lika are also very beautiful, so if you haven’t had a lucky day fishing, you will at least have had a very pleasant day out.

Departures in:

Recreational fishing licenses are issued by the Port Authority of Rijeka (and its branches) every day from 00:00 to 24:00. Port Authority of Opatija tel. + 385 51/ 711 249

There are daily, weekly and monthly licenses, and they are required both for fishing from the coast, from the vessel and spearfishing.

1-day licence: 60 kn (about 8 €)

3-day licence: 150 kn (about 21 €)

7-day licence: 250 kn (about 35 €)

"Big game fishing" licenses (tuna fish, scabbard fish, swordfish) are issued for seven-day periods. Two hand-trolls or a fishing-line with unlimited hook size may be used and the catch of only one fish per day is allowed.

Mali Lošinj, the world capital of spearfishing, is the venue of the biggest international spearfishing competition - The Towns New Year Cup. On that occasion more than 170 spearfishers dive in the Lošinj local seas.

The Towns Cup was later joined by the Countries' Cup, that in the last twenty years has been frequently representing the Europen Cup finals.

All the leading figures of world spearfishing, fished there in recent years. None of them has failed to attend.

The Croatian Adriatic sea is rich with the bluefin tuna. Otherwise a highly migratory species it has chosen the Adriatic sea for its home and this is the only known place on earth, where bluefin can be caught any time of the year. Tunas here range from baby size to giants weighing over 300 kg. They are present along the outer coast of the islands and often they come well inshore entering estuaries and channels.

The ultimate fishing challenge for many sports fishermen, the broadbill swordfish, is also present in fair numbers, which are decreasing from south to north, but the fact is that they are often spotted breaking the surface during daytime, although seldom caught. Still, the challenge is there.

Sharks, even though not as frequent here as in tropical waters, are around in respectable numbers, the major species being the blue shark and thresher shark. The best time of year for these are the summer and autumn months.

In March and April there is great fishing for little tunnies, which come in huge shoals to the inshore waters. Little tunnies in the Adriatic grow to sizes up to 13 kg, and average about 10 kilos. At the end of summer the squid have their turn and you’ll see hundreds of locals feathering for these off the rocks.

Their catch is then barbecued the same night. Around the islands species such as the albacore, the amberjack and mahi-mahi are present in great numbers. Even smaller still, and just as delicious, are the various species of sea bream, and the grey mullet which you will see swimming around the sides of rocks and quays. These can be fairly easily caught on freshwater tackle using a bit of mussel or cheese for bait.

BIG GAME FISHING - big tuna, swordfish and shark fishing

There are two possible methods of big game fishing: troling (panula – fishing from a moving boat) and drifting (bating).

Trolling is done at the speed of 5-7 knots with two or more fishing poles. Artificial or live bate is used. Trolling is done from one spot by throwing peaces of bate in the sea. The ship is equipped for fishing with fishing chairs, fishing poles and rollers used for extraction of the bigger samples.

CLASSIC FISHING-  smaller tuna, palamida, tooth fish and other medium-sized fish

For small and midle sized fish, trolling with artificial or live bait is usually practiced. One pole is lowered to a certain depth using a weight and two other are dragged just slightly below the sea surface. Depending on the season, tooth fish is caught along the shore and tuna, palamida and lampuga are caught in the open sea. Traw-line can also be used.

SMALL FISHING -
smaller fish

Fishing with small fishing poles from anchored ships. Sardine, squid, sea worms and clams are used as bait. Locations along the coast depend on the type of fish you'd like to catch. Traw-line can also be used.
