The seaside promenade, «lungomare», 12 km long, extends from Volosko to
Lovran. Its construction took place between the end of the 19th and the
beginning of the 20th century.
The first stage of the project, from Volosko to Slatina, was completed
in 1889, while the second stage, the one to Lovran, was brought to completion in 1911. Even today, the
«lungomare» offers possibilities of an exceptional psycho-physical

climbs and descents, away from roads and the traffic of town streets,
the promenade offers not only the thalossotherapeutic, curative sea
aerosol, but it also narrates the story of the Opatija Riviera, all

secessionist facades of the many hotels and villas, with numerous
monuments, in the gardens, gazebos and parks.
Here are hidden and revealed sea access paths, scattered hidden
benches, mighty oak trees and laurel groves touching the sea, panoramas
offering curiosity and peace in the unveiling of all the spots on the
horizon, and old-fashioned lamp-posts all along the coastal promenade
that allow for unforgettable evening and night walks.

The Opatija parks are some of the best known parks & architectural
monuments in Croatia. On a surface of 3.64 ha, between the main town
road and the sea, some 60 fields are located that surround the best
known monuments from Opatija’s history: villa Angiolina, Amalija, hotel
Kvarner, St. Jakov’ Church. Today, this park complex is divided into
two parts, one, along the church leads to the Park of St. Jacobs and the
other, near villa Angiolina, leads to Park Angiolina. It all started in
1844 when the patrician and merchant Higinio Scarpa (1794-1866) from
Rijeka, erected and arranged a garden in memory of his spouse, full of
rare and exotic plants and trees. To this day the park has retained its
original architecture.
Two styles prevail: the English one
(winding paths) and the French one (flowery surfaces, according to the
seasons). Care is devoted to the park on a daily basis. Although it is
adorned by more than 150 plant species, it should be mentioned that
until fifty years ago, this number even exceeded 220 types. The most
prominent are: laurel (Laurus nobilis), the leafless magnolia (Magnolia
yulan, Magnolia grandiflora), the high and low Chamaerops ecelsa,
Chamaerops humilis, the caucasian fir-tree (Abies nordmanniana),
ceddar-trees (Cedrus), Australian laurel (Pitosporum tobira), pines (
Pinus pinea), cherry laurel (Prunus lauricerasus), olives (Olea sativa),
wood date-palms (Phoenix sylvestris), sequoias (Sequoia) and camelias
(Camelia japonica), that have become some of the symbols of Opatija. Relax holiday in Opatija

The spacious area of Kastav, North-west of Rijeka, between Istria
and the Croatian Littoral area, has been defined by its
strategic-traffic significance. This crossroads, and frequently the
boundary of historical changes, power, events and various cultural
influences, possesses a powerful, distinctly Croatian identity,
preserved “vernacular, ancient customs and habits”. These are moderated
walks through the gentle landscape made of hills and valleys, arable
land and courts, well-preserved folk architecture, sink-holes and
caves. In every cave, according to the legend, live «malik» that look
like five-six year old boy «mischievous, but not bad, “with his red
hat”.
Walk along Kastav
A town on a dominant
hill (377m) overlooking the Kvarner is a wonderful belvedere attracting
with its historic-cultural, sacral, music-festival, fair, ethno
and gastro features. This popular excursion place is full of sacral museums (Bacvarski – Cooper’s museum) and fortification buildings. Here
are located the famous, well-preserved town of Loggia (16th century),
the Great Men Alley, the building and memorials of the well-known
school Delavska škola (19th century) and the Reading Room, the first
Croatian reading room in Istria (1866). The belvederes, the old
fortress - today promenade - Fortica, the space in front of the parish
church and the view from the udika tower, offer a special experience
and are always a reason for visiting Kastav.
Walks along the woods Loza and Luzina
The
Luzina wood (proposed for the category of protected landscape) and the
nearby Loza wood, is “the biggest coherent wood complex in the Rijeka
hinterland”, rich in Karst phenomena. The most interesting is the tour
of the two highest peaks of the Luzina wood - Stanic (465 m) and Makov
vrh (504 m), from which a view extends on the Kastav area, Lisina and
Ucka. The cracks, sink-holes and caves are particularly interesting.
The deepest sink-hole is Knezdol, with varied wood life and ponds. A
