Church of Mary’s Annunciatio |
 |
Church
of Mary’s Annunciation - For this neo Romanic church with three naves
the ground stone was placed by Franjo Nagl, bishop of Trieste, in 1906,
but the arrival of Austria postponed further building by the blueprints
of Karla Seidla. The Italians continued building the church with the
stone from Kastav, and for the inner decoration they used paintings of
the Slovenian master Kralj. |

Croatian walk of fame |
 |

Girl with the seagull |
 |
Girl
with the seagull - On a cape in front of the former graveyard one girl
made of stone reaches her hand out to a seagull. This is, however a
newer sculpture made by sculptor Car, and it was set on this place in
1956 and it became one of the symbols of Opatija. Up till then, on that
same place stood the statue of "Madonna del Mare" by Rathausky from Graz till it was thrown to the sea during a horrible storm. |

Imperial Hotel |
 |
Imperial
Hotel was the second hotel built in Opatija. As soon as it was obvious
that Kvarner won’t be able to accommodate all the visitors, the
Southern Railways Society started building a new hotel, opened in 1885
and named after the Austrian throne heiress Stephanie (who appeared at
the opening with her husband). Architect Wilhelm offered the gusts all
the luxury that time could offer, from central heating to a pool, and
later a cinema which was connected hallways. |

Julius Schuller monument |
 |
Julius Schuller monument - Friedrich Julius Schuller was the managing director of the Southern Railways Society, which bought "Villa Angiolina",
built Kvarner Hotel, its dependences, as well as other hotels and
resorts. He is considered the creator of Opatija as a modern tourist
resort. |
|
|
Kvarner Hotel
|
 |
Kvarner
Hotel is the first hotel built in Opatija and most probably the first
built on the eastern coast of Adriatic. It was built in 1884 in only
ten months on the grounds formally occupied by family Tomasic’s wine
yards. Behind the initiative and investment was non other than
Friedrich Julius Schuller, the managing director of the Southern
Railways Society, and the main architects were Wilhelm and Meese.
Northern part of the hotel used to have warm baths, connected to the
hotel by a covered hallway. |

Lungomare |
 |
Lungomare
(Coastal promenade) - Built in stages, this promenade stretches from
Preluk to Lovran in total length of 12 kilometers. The initiator of
this project was the Society for environmental beauty, but the project
managers had problems with purchase of the land and numerous disputes
were settled by the authority of the regional captain Jettmar. First,
northern stage (Volosko- Slatina) was ended in 1889, when Opatija
officially became a health resort and the south stage (from Opatija to
Lovran) not earlier than 1911. |

Madonna |
 |
Madonna
- On a cape in front of the former graveyard one girl made of stone
reaches her hand out to a seagull. This is, however a newer sculpture
made by sculptor Car, and it was set on this place in 1956 and it
became one of the symbols of Opatija. Up till then, on that same place
stood the statue of "Madonna del Mare" by Rathausky from Graz till it was thrown to the sea during a horrible storm. "Madonna"
was places there to watch over the soul of the count Arthur
Kesselstadt, who went missing not far from that cape during a storm in
1891. |

Park Angiolina |
 |
Park
Angiolina - Villa Angiolina - In the historical documents we find
information about the creation of the park from 1845 till 1860 nearby
villa "Angiolina"
the property Iginio Scarpa, great nature lover. Many of the plants were
brought to the garden from Far East, South America, Australia and other
parts of the world. Central park in Opatija is a horticultural monument
on the surface of 3.64 ha. Within there are 150 plant species. Many of
them originate from far parts of the world and aren’t typical for this
part of the world. |

|
Saint Jacob’s church |
 |
Saint
Jacob’s church - Built most likely in 1420ies, as a colony of
Benedictine refugees from the Furlan monastery, to this day the church
has kept very little of its original appearance: in 1506 father Simon
built of rebuilt the church, as it says on the inscription over the
entrance; at the end of XVIII century it was thoroughly renovated and
in 1930ies significantly expanded. The church keeps the replica of one
of Mestrovic’s reliefs. In XIX century this was the home of the first
school in Opatija. |

|
Summer stage |
 |
Summer
stage - Here, where today films are shown, should have stood a huge
“sanatorium palace” with ball and concert rooms, pool with artificial
waves, shops and cafés. The realization of this project was stopped by
the beginning of the World war I, and the new owners, the Italians,
used the foundations to create a beach (today’s Lido) and for the
tennis courts, subsequently turned into a stage where European operetta
festivals with famous names like Kálmána and Lehára took place. |
|
|
Villa Amalia |
 |
Villa
Amalia - Built in 1890 as a dependence of the six years older Hotel
Kvarner, just behind the cold baths complex and on the place of once
very popular wooden secession bathing place that burnt down, villa
Amalia was intended for the pickiest guests who wanted to distance
themselves from the rest of the hotel clientele. One of the most famous
residents of villa Amalia were the Romanian royal couple Karol and
Elisabeth (alias Carmen Sylva), the founders of the forest promenade,
the German imperial family. |
